What is the capital region superload corridors plan?
The purpose of this study is to develop a Capital Region Superload Corridors Plan that identifies projects to address constraints to superload freight load movement within New York’s Capital Region. Superload manufacturers are important economic drivers within the Capital Region and facilitating the movement of their products to customers and intermodal facilities within and outside of the Region is vital to their success.
WHAT IS A SUPERLOAD CORRIDOR?
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) defines superloads as “any vehicle or combination of vehicles which exceed 16 feet in width; or 16 feet in height or greater; or greater than 160 feet in length; or 200,000 pounds or greater in gross weight; or a combination of the above.”
Due to the extraordinary size of these loads, the trucks moving them are unable to navigate many roads and highways due to physical constraints of the roadways and infrastructure. Rail and barge movement are also challenging, given the characteristics of these products. Policies and processes at both the state and local level add additional barriers.
